A MUSLIM AS MAYOR OF LONDON
Sir,
The election of Mr Khan, a Muslim of Pakistani origin, to the post of Mayor of London, has come as a shock to most of us who believe in true secularism. Mr Khan's victory is due to recent demographic changes in this country, especially in London- not all beneficial or positive in a country guided by the "vanishing" Church of England..
In the past few years there has been an alarming increase in the number of migrants arriving in the UK by hook or crook. Most happen to be MUSLIM who are a lot more indoctrinated in separatism and fundamentalism, and conscious of their separate identity than an average citizen brought up appreciating secularism, democracy, freedom of speech and women's dignity.
This country rests on CHRISTIAN ethos & values that made many communities feel safe and at home here. They include Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Atheists, Lesbians, Gays and so on who have had very tragic experience of Islam in their countries of origin (Yazidis and Hindus, for example). They will all be worried at this result.
The Muslim community, on the other hand, already too frequently in the news for all the wrong reasons, will be jubilant and get a psychological boost by this victory and there may be increase in conversions to Islam by the impressionable and the gullible. All this is going to impact on immediate and long term ethos (way of life) and security of this country. The much feared Islomophobia is not fiction.
We desperately needed to see the next Mayor of London someone who flies the Christian flag at home. To change the political climate in this country will require the commitment of all the mainstream politicians and the Church of England.
