A statements that says, "India was divided between Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India," is NOT wholly correct.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The first part of the statement is correct. Pakistan was, and is, an ISLAMIC Republic. See her Constitution which begins with a verse from KORAN. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ But India was, and is NOT, Hindu. Her Constitutin is NOT Hindu. It does not begin with a verse from Shri BHAGWAD GITA or SRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB. Otherwise how could the First Lady, the President of All-India Congress Party, be a CATHOLIC whose spiritual loyalty is to VATICAN, not to Ayodhya, Mathura or even Nankana Sahib. And how could Zakir Hussain, Mohammed Hidayutullah and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed become her Presidents and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad be her first EDUCATION Minister? \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ These Muslims did not swear loyalty to "Hindu" India. Did they? For everyone's information, they swore loyalty to SECULAR India.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ It would have been far better had the division of the sub continent taken place as per your assertion in order to keep the situation clear for all. Things would have been crystal clear in India, too. But now the piolitical and communal situation in India is in confusion and mess. In HINDU India everyone would have known who is who. Now each community, especially Muslim and Christian, within India has become a "contender" for power and territory. There will always be insecurity, fear and uncertanty but never peace. Even in liberal, secular, Europe and America the Christians do not let the others (Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and so on) share in political POWER. There is NO political and ideological VACUUM there as in India today that needs an Italian born female to "guide" the Prime Minister! \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ INDIA HAS NO CLEAR IDENTITY. The man in charge, after the departure of the British, was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who was autocratic, imperialist and NON HINDU (if not Hindu hater). In hindsight and with his FOURTH generation in absolute POWER in India we can safely and categorically say that- he was more keen on ensuring the "realm" to stay in his own family than open it to PEOPLE. He could also SOLVE the Kashmir dispute in ways that are sheer common sense and elementary simple. He could move the Muslims to other parts of India. He could integrate the State in India but not keep its identity SEPARATE by incorporating Article 370 in his Constitution. And he could simply go on to capture the whole, including North Kashmir instead of "begging" the UNO for "ceae fire". This patriotic step was not taken even by his daughter, Indira Gandhi, in 1972 when she was victorious over Pakistan. Nehru Dynasty has a hidden agenda to keep North Kashmir OUT but South Kashmir IN. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The suspicion remains that the "dispute" suites the India under Dynasty and Congress. There are a few advantages that come to one's mind, e.g., Tension between India and Pakistan that compels the countries to arm themselves AGAINST each other. Purchase of arms and weapons is very LUCRATIVE for the rulers with huge commissions like the BOFORS for Rajiv Gandhi. That was just ONE deal. There are even more "lucratrive" deals when they buy tanks, fighter planes and bombers, cruisers, destroyers, minesweepers, supply ships and equipment of all sorts. The sums that go into the pockets of crooks and dishonest bureaucracy are ASTERONOMICAL. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ So, who wants a settlement? The prospect of war and concflict also make the rulers look "defenders, protectors and saviours" of people. That means perpetuaton of rule WITHIN one dynasty, within one Party. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Sadly, people in ex colonies are still not empowered or sovereign at the level of Europeans to throw out the corrupt and dynastic rulers. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Contrary to common perception, India is not even truly secular since Secularism to be valid in DelhIi has got to be valid in Lahore. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Lahore can NEVER be in another country when Destiny, or Nature, made it the "TWIN SISTER" of Delhi, if not Amritsar. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The esteemed writers below, all Muslim, would know that Division of India on religious criterion left more Muslims in India than those who went over to Pakistan. So Kashmir is NOT in Hindu India as you assert. The MUSLIMS IN INDIA, too, are part of India and they too are share-holders in India's problems and Destiny, that is Kashmir. To take Kashmir OUT is also to "rob" them of their constitutional status, standing and legitimacy. So it is possible that Kashmir will be the key to end Partition, or lead to atomic war that will destroy BOTH. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ No wonder the "issue" from Indian point of view and "dispute" from Pakistan's, cannot be solved. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Instead of being loggerheads over the issue (or DISPUTE) why not see all the Muslims move out to Pakistan thus leaving India as a HINDU country. Later they claimed that the Maharaja had signed a document, an Instrument of Accession, allowing the Indians to intervene in Kashmir. India has never allowed this plebiscite to be carried out. Houses are being burnt, people arrested, tortured, raped and killed. According to Kashmiri sources this has resulted in the deaths of over 80 000 people so far. The numbers continue to rise as the Indians are using increasingly brutal methods to repress the Kashmiri freedom struggle. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ SOLUTION:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ The international community needs to force India to accept holding talks with Kashmiri representatives and the Pakistani government so that a peaceful solution can be facilitated.
