Why Hindus are angry at Muslims in India ?

By Kaleem Kawaja via e-mail

Day in and day out the "angry Hindus" charge the power structure in India with the allegation that the Muslim community is being appeased and the government is eager to go out of its way to please Muslims. Since currently it is not possible to blame Muslims for oppressing Hindus, the attack is launched against the government for minoritism. The anger of the Hindus is directed at both the perceived appeaser and perceived appeased. The disregard for truth is extraordinary indeed.

That an Indian Muslim should be left free to live his life in accordance with his religious beliefs and customs strikes the "angry Hindus" as an act of appeasement, a concession. But the "angry Hindus" is not angry at similar protection given to ethnic Hindu groups by letting many Hindus not accept the provisions of the Hindu Code. They erroneously blame the Muslims for having more than one wife while the government database shows that more Hindus are being practicing polygamy than Muslims. They attach the government for the Shah Bano legislation but completely ignore the 1976 amendment of the Special Marriage Act that allows Hindus men special privileges of inheritance under the Hindu United Family Act that are not allowed under the secular Indian Succession Act. A gender bias may exist in the Muslim personal Law, but so do the separate Personal Laws of the Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, and Buddhists contain biases favoring men over women.

They are angry at the Muslims because Article 30 of the Indian Constitution allows rights to minorities to establish their own schools; but they overlook the fact that the Arya Samaj, Ramakrishna Mission and the institutions of Marwari Hindus are benefiting similarly from the same Article 30. The "angry Hindu" is angry at the Indian government for the ban on Salman Rushdie's book "Setanic Verses" but ignores the fact that Dr. Ambedkar's book, "Riddles of Rama and Krishns," Aubrey Menon's book "Rama Retold," and Sytanley Wolport's book, "Nine Hours to Rama" have also been similarly proscribed by the Indian government.

The "angry Hindu" is angry at Muslims because a sizeable number of Hindus had to move away from Kashmirdue to the large-scale violence there, but he ignores the fact that similarly a large number of Muslims had to leave for good many villages in some districts in Gujarat, Bihar and Assam. They had to leave for good areas in cities in Gujarat (Surat, Ahmedabad, Naroda-Patia, Baroda, the Panch-mahal district) Bihar (Bhagalpur, Jamshedpur), Maharastra (Bhivandi, Malegaon), and Assam (Berapat, Nellie). These are the villages and cities where they had lived for generations, but had no migrate from due to non-stop anti-Muslim violence there. In many cities across India even well-educated Muslims were forced to leave to survive. Despite many promises the government failed to help them go back to their homes.

The "angry Hindus" is angry that Article 370 of the Indian Constitution limits rights of ownership of property in Kashmir to Kashmiris, most of whom are Muslims. But he ignores the fact that similarly Articles 371A provides similar protection to residents of mostly Hindu population in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram.

The "angry Hindu" is angry because the Indian state does not formally embrace the concept of the Hindu Rastra, even though for all practical purposes it practices most elements of that policy. All government, private and other public events in India begin with prayers from Hindu religious scriptures. All national institutions and awards are named after names from Hindu mythology and religious scriptures.

He is angry whenever any Muslim, no matter how loyal, meritorious or diluted, is elevated to a position of dignity in India. The "angry Hindu" does not want to even give a hearing to the Muslim community on their most genuine and well documented grievances the Sachar Commission report that details the across the board severe impoverishment and backwardness of the Muslim community.

If the "angry Hindu" ever foes an objective study of the ground realities he will realize that he has nothing to be angry about. In fact, he has every reason to be happy to find that in practice, the Indian state has moved very far from the secular state that was promulgated at Independence in 1947. He should be happy at the near monopoly that he has in the socio-economic life of India, in employment in the burgeoning private and multinational corporations, the government undertakings, the political parties, the better higher education institutions and the society at large.

It is time for the "angry Hindu" to realize that he is beign miled and used by the opportunistic right wing politicians. He should cool his misplaced anger at the Indian Muslims and find ways t reduce the heightened tensions in the nation that are hurting India's well-being at a critical time.

======================= Sample Letter ============================

Dear Editor:

The following is in response to the article "Why Hindus are angry at Muslims in India ?" by Mr. Kaleem Kawaja dated Aug 2, 2008.

Mr. Kaleem Kawaja must be from Association of Indian Muslims of America. In spite of enjoying special privileges from a country with a majority of Hindus, such a letter from someone like him justifying by obfuscating facts is very deplorable. My friend, let us call a spade a spade. Do not justify by giving examples remote facts and obfuscating the issue. Comparing the Muslims rights to establish their own schools with tiny groups of Arya Samaj, RK mission that might enjoy such a privilege is hardly any comparison. Anyone can find exceptions. Comparing the ethnic cleansing in Kashmir valley where 350,000 Kashmiri Hindus were terrorized, thousands brutally murdered right in front of their relatives and living as refugees in their own country in subhuman homes for 18 years with Muslims living their village for lack of opportunities is a stretch. Perhaps, Mr. Kaleem or his loved ones should be terrorized to leave his home and live in subhuman home to understand the situation. This kind of belittling the grave issue and trying to put into ones advantage is not even politics, it is inhuman.

Have you ever spoken about 3785 victims in last four years, predominantly Hindus being victims of terrorist attacks in India? Have you ever spoken about Hindus reduced from 25% to 1% in Pakistan and to 7% out of 31% in Bangladesh with their land taken away, with their daughters separated and converted, raped in front of their relatives, all justified in the name of the religion. Perhaps, Mr. Kaleem should take time to read the detailed report put together by Hindu American Foundation that was submitted to US Legislators. They even give day to day account of atrocities in Bangla Desh. Have you ever thought of what great American Historian Will Durant called the Islamic invasion of India is worlds is bigger holocaust than that of Jewish holocaust where 60 million people were killed. They are your ancestors who are subjected to untold violence. They are your forefathers and foremothers.

With three Presidents in India from Muslim background, with four top bollywood stars being Muslims, with 500 crores for Haj trips while 40 hectares of land not being allowed for Amarnath trip. But beyond this, I am not angry at Muslims. You are doing what you are taught to do. All other religions are Kafirs, all other religious followers are Dhimmis and their women can be taken as slaves for producing more Muslims with a political goal of establishing Islam. All this justified and hallowed by your religious scriptures with your prophet leading by example.

I am angry at Hindus because we have not learnt what US and Israel has learnt. When they burn one of others home, burn 10 of their homes, when they take away one acre of your land, take away 10 acres of their land, when they demolish one temple blow away 10 mosques. For you even Mahatma Gandhi is a Dhimmi.

I am angry at Hindus because they are in deep slumber. Our scriptures always taught us to fight for protection of Dharma and if necessary take weapons. I am angry at Hindus who are so insensitive and coward and selfish. I remember when I was in India, people in Afghanistan beheaded a Hindu IT engineer. When I went to work that day, not a single person at work talks about it, feels about it or do about it. I am angry at this. During the same time another incident occurred i.e., a blast at Varanasi temple and so many Hindus died. When I walk or talk to people at work no body bothered or feels about it. I am angry about this. I do not blame Islam rapists raping Hindus, Islam terrorists killing Hindus, Islam kidnapers kidnapping Hindus and converting them to their religion, etc., etc., I am angry at Hindus. Our Hindus have to read and imbibe million times what Albert Einstein says:
