He made the supreme sacrifice for the sake of the men of faith. He gave his head but uttered not a groan. He did the deed to uphold the Dharma. This is how Guru Gobind Singh described the supreme sacrifice by his father Guru Tegh Bahadur, for the cause of the Hindus of Kashmir. The date was 1675. Aurangzeb was then the ruler. He was eager to convert the entire land of Hindustan into a land of Islam. He set about it in a methodical manner. After banning Hindu festivals in places of worship and in public, he turned his eyes on the Hindu centres of learning and spiritual power. Kashmir, Kurukshetra, Kashi and Haridwar came in the first list. The Brahmins in Kashmir were his chief targets.
Aurangzeb encouraged his Governor in Kashmir, Iftikhar Khan, to use all means to en masse convert the Brahmins. His son Guru Gobind, who was only nine then, asked his father the reason for his pensive mood. The father explained to the son that the country was facing a situation of hardship as the non-Muslims were being tortured and forced to embrace Islam. This he said would set the trend for others to follow. Khan enticed the Pandits with money, land and government positions. When they did not agree, he threatened them, jailed them and promised release only if they converted to Islam. When this too did not work, with the approval and at the instance of Aurangzeb, he started killing the Kashmiri Brahmins. There are accounts of the piled up sacred threads of the killed Pandits. For centuries, the Kashmiri Hindus had been pursuing only religious and spiritual studies and had next to nothing in terms of physical training to defend and attack. The Pandits, in a group, went to Amarnath, to seek Lord Mahadev's help. At Amarnath, one of the Pandits had a dream in which Shiva directed them to go to Punjab and seek the help of Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. In accordance with the Divine direction, they went to Punjab. They met Guru Tegh Bahadur in May 1675, at Anandpur.
The head of the Kashmiri Pandit's delegation was Kripa Ram Dutt of Mattan. They related to the Guru their woes. The Guru assured them that he would do all he could to save them. Then he was in a pensive mood. His son Guru Gobind, who was only nine then, asked his father the reason for his pensive mood. The father explained to the son that the country was facing a situation of hardship as the non-Muslims were being tortured and forced to embrace Islam.
When the son asked him what was the solution, Guru Tegh Bahadur said the remedy lay in the supreme sacrifice by a truly worthy person. Hearing this, as if speaking under a spell, the son asked, "Who is worthier than you, Father?" This spontaneous reply confirmed the resolution of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who had already thought along those lines. "I will not convert to Islam." As was the practice of the rulers of those days, the Guru was to be executed in public. He sent word to Aurangzeb through the Kashmiri Pandits that they would all convert to Islam if Guru Tegh Bahadur embraced Islam. Word reached Aurangzeb. He issued orders to arrest Guru Tegh Bahadur and present him at his court.
Meanwhile, the Guru sought the blessings of God to bestow upon him the glory of martyrdom and then he set out to Delhi. He was arrested and taken to Delhi, where he was jailed and tortured. The physical harm caused to him cannot be described. Then Aurangzeb told him to perform some miracle, so that he may be released. The Guru refused, saying he would not interfere with the Divine will. As an ultimate test of his limits of tolerance, the Guru's devoted follower Mati Das was tied between two pillars and his body was sawed into two, head downwards. The Guru's resolve was unmoved; no, he would not give up his faith and embrace Islam.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was produced in the court of Aurangzeb twice. The first time he told Aurangzeb, "If God wishes that there should be only one religion Islam, nobody would be born a non-Muslim, and that is not the case. You are violating the orders of the Almighty and as a consequence you shall rot in hell. Can you ask your ears to do the job of the eyes and the mouth to do the job of the nose? If you can do that, then convert Hindus to Islam. Why should we renounce the Divine path and accept man-made religion and pave our way to hell?"
This obviously would have enraged Aurangzeb. Within a week of the first appearance, Guru Tegh Bahadur was brought to the court a second time, on November 11, 1675.
Aurangzeb gave him a choice, one last time-Islam or the sword.
The Guru said clearly, categorically, "I will not convert to Islam." As was the practice of the rulers of those days, the Guru was to be executed in public.
He sat at the very spot where his disciples Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Dyala (thrown in a cauldron of boiling water) and Bhai Sati Das (wrapped in cotton wool and burnt) had been slain the previous day.
There was great composure on his face. He was absorbed in prayer.
It is at this very spot that Gurdwara Shishganj stands.
His son, and tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh wrote in his Bachitra Natak that he laid down his life for the sake of Dharma; he sacrificed his life but not his ideal.
Sar kati par sar na jhuki.
More than 325 years later, the blood-thirst in Kashmir has not been satiated. How much more will it take?

"First and foremost among the wonders of Kashmir stand her idol temples. In and around Kashmir (Srinagar), there are more than one hundred and fifty temples which are built of more hewn stone, fitted so accurately one upon the other, that there is absolutely no cement used. These stones have been so carefully placed in position, without plaster or mortar, that a sheet of paper could not be passed between the joints. The blocks are from three to twenty gaz in length, one gaz in depth, and one to five gaz in breadth. The marvel is how these stones were transported and erected.
The temples are nearly all built on the same plan. There is a square enclosure which in some places reaches the height of thirty gaz, while each side is about three hundred gaz long. Inside this enclosure there are pillars, and on the top of the pillars there are square capitals; on the top of these again, are placed supports and most of these separate parts are made out of one block of stone. On the pillars are fixed the supports of the arches, and each arch is three or four gaz in width. Under the arch are a gallery and doorway. On the outside and inside roof, the arch are pillars of forty or fifty gaz in height, having supports and capitals of one block of stone. On the top of this are placed four pillars of one or two pieces of stone.
In the rest of the world there is not to be seen or heard of, one building like this.
The inside and outside of the halls have the appearance of two porticos, and these are covered with one or two stones. The capitals, the ornamentation in relief, the cornices, the ‘dog-tooth’ work, the inside covering and the outside, are all crowded with pictures and paintings which I am incapable of describing. Some represent laughing and weeping figures, which astound the beholder. In the middle is a lofty throne of hewn stone, and over that, a dome made entirely of stone, which I cannot describe. In the rest of the world there is not to be seen or heard of, one building like this. How, wonderful that there should (here) be a hundred and fifty of them."
Separatist leaders are Islamic fundamentalists
IT sometimes baffles me how these APHC and other separatist leaders have managed to turn a secular and peace-loving society into a conservative, fundamentalist and violent one which sees everything from the prism of religion. They call themselves the true representatives of the Kashmiri population and reject the demand for trifurcation of the state along communal lines, implying that these leaders believe and want others also to believe that they represent the people of other faiths also who are the citizens of the state and enjoy as much rights as the community to which these leaders belong.
There are Buddhists in Leh district and Hindus in Jammu region residing for centuries. The land of Kashmir therefore belongs to Sikhs as well as the Hindus as much as it belongs to the Muslims.
However, the truth is that these leaders have no regard for the fears and apprehensions of other religious communities of the state and rather extend full support to various Islamic Jehadis operating in the state at the behest of Pakistani government. These Hurriyat leaders and Shabir Shahs who vehemently reject the demand for trifurcation of the state, leave aside addressing a meeting, have never in the last 10 years visited Jammu, Doda, Kathua, Udhampur and can count on finger-tips the number of times they visited Leh. I am also certain that they do not have the courage to address such a gathering at these places, which are very much part of the same state and where almost 45 per cent of the state population resides. The reason is obvious; they do not have the moral courage to face the people of other religious faiths. Mr Jagmohan in his book, My Frozen Turbulence writes that the fundamentalists exploited the religious sentiments of the people and most of the posters and pamphlets were written by Shabir Shah. The main agenda of Shabir's speeches, he writes, was: The enemies of Islam are uniting on all fronts… The children of faith should now unite… Allah's will is our guide... Quran is our constitution... Jehad is our strategy... It's no wonder then that people of other faiths do not trust them.
Kashmir has a 2,500 years of recorded history which dates back to 261-271 b.c. when Emperor Ashoka established Srinagari and organised the Buddhist Council meeting here. Kalhana’s Rajatarangini and Fa Hien’s records prove that the people of the Valley were either Hindus or Buddhists. The same people thereafter in 15th to 19th century adopted Islam, maybe through the influence of Sufi saints or coercion by the various Muslim kings who ruled Kashmir for over 500 years. Some even adopted Sikhism during the Sikh rule in 1819-1835. Then there are Buddhists in Leh district and Hindus in Jammu region residing for centuries. The land of Kashmir therefore belongs to Sikhs as well as the Hindus as much as it belongs to the Muslims. Or else, these leaders must define the geographical boundaries of Kashmir as well, as to who all can be called Kashmiris.
Evidently, the heart of these separatist leaders beats for only the Valley Muslims and not for the people of other communities. Not a tear is shed when their Islamic Jehadis carry out massacares of minority community but whenever even one Islamic Jehadi is killed in the Valley, they immediately rush to the streets and appeal to international human rights organisations to intervene and blame the security forces for human rights violations. Huge amounts of money supplied to them by their mentors, i.e. Pakistan, is distributed to the families of the killed terrorists, and when their Jehadis carry out the heinous murder of minorities, they wash their hands off by stating that the act has been done by the government agencies to defame their holy war.
They know in their hearts that Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave their homeland by the Mujahideens who were acting at the behest of Pakistan's ISI and these leaders and not because Mr Jagmohan had hatched some conspiracy. Had they not left the Valley at that time then thousands would have fallen prey by now to these Islamic Jehadis whom the APHC leaders and leaders like Shabir Shah extend support.
These leaders are therefore not the representatives of the Kashmiri people, they should be henceforth addressed as the representatives of Islamic fundamentalists from the Valley. Their communal mind and parochial outlook has vitiated the minds of the Muslim population of the Valley. In an open and vibrant democratic society of India where nothing can be hidden from media these separatist leaders have vitiated the minds of the common Muslim man; as a result, he sees nothing else except Indian conspiracy and cannot think beyond the horizons of their own religious identity and their religion.

Pak's Strategy and India's Response
The Americans also, in spite of all the assurances made by them, will not pressurise Pakistan to curb the activities of scores of terrorist organisations operating from its soil, as the recent statements of Colin Powell are indicators. Pakistan, realising the Western world’s concerns about terrorism, has reframed its Kashmir strategy.
Firstly, project with renewed vigour that the violence in Kashmir is not terrorism but an indigenous freedom movement launched by the Kashmiris against the repressive Indian rule.
Secondly, counter Indian charges of cross-border terrorism by launching a media campaign, particularly in Western countries against state terrorism by India in Kashmir.
Thirdly, sideline the moderate elements in HM (the largest indigenous terrorist outfit operating in the Valley) and also induct more foreign terrorists into HM in order to further strengthen it. The entire hierarchy of HM in the Valley has been reshuffled by the ISI.
Fourthly, the terrorist camps have been shifted away from media eyes to remote places.
Fifthly, project that Kashmiri Mujahideens neither have any global agenda nor do they radically oppose the West or the USA. They are confined to only Kashmir.
Sixthly, persuade the terrorists returning from Afghanistan including Afghans to enter J&K.
Seventhly, persuade USA to pressurise India to respond to Pakistan’s peace overtures and accept a process of sustained dialogue on the Kashmir dispute.
Eighthly, launch a massive recruitment drive in J&K to recruit young boys. Already, in last two months almost 100 to 150 young boys have been recruited and sent across for training in PoK.
Ninthly, increase the level of violence to such an extent that India is forced upon to react and thereby appeal to the West to take note of the deteriorating situation.
Pakistan might have tided over the Afghan crisis successfully but there are undercurrents of resentment in Pak society on account of the defeat they have suffered in Afghanistan; it is not Taliban and Al Qaeda that have been defeated; it is Pakistan as a nation which has been defeated and if the Indian Government continues to avoid Pakistan steadfastly and ensures that Musharraf has nothing to show to its people on the Kashmir front, it will be all over for Pakistan and its military establishment.
Therefore, Musharraf is in a hurry if one goes by the statements of Pakistani rulers and the nature of targets the terrorists are striking with remarkable regularity.
If credible action is not taken now then the basic values for which this nation stands that are already under strain will further weaken. Most Indians in view of the continuous terrorist strikes favour a stringent action against Pakistan. Emotions apart, we must learn from the Afghan war that an ultramodern Air Force of USA took almost two months to finish off Taliban and Al Qaeda, that was when they did not have to face any retaliatory action. The armchair scholars have also been threatening us that the government should not do anything rash because Pakistan has nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are only a deterrent and not meant for fighting wars, particularly when there is a nuclear symmetry. Therefore Musharraf may continue to make noises but he cannot use nuclear weapons because he knows how severe would be India’s response. The camps in PoK are not the right target; hot pursuit is ruled out as it is not tactically feasible. Offensive operations on ground in J&K will also not achieve anything substantial.
The government this time should ensure that it does not get satisfied by mere peace gestures or promises. It must steadfastly stick to the demand of extraditing Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JEM) chiefs and Dawood Ibrahim to India.
In the prevailing international situation we find ourselves in a catch-22 situation. The way out is: first, we must define the political objective, which in my view should be to hurt Pakistan whereby supporting proxy war becomes economically, politically and militarily unviable for it and that can be achieved only if the Pakistani military establishment is discredited.
Once the political objective becomes clear, the military objectives and diplomatic objectives can easily be defined. All this needs careful planning, cool deliberation and right selection of military objectives. However, the government this time should ensure that it does not get satisfied by mere peace gestures or promises. It must steadfastly stick to the demand of extraditing Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JEM) chiefs and Dawood Ibrahim to India. Unquote
