POLICE are questioning a suspected al-Qaida operative arrested in a major anti-terrorism raid on a house where explosives were found.
Scotland Yard said the "relatively small amount" of explosives had been removed safely from the house in Gloucester, where the 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday.
He was transferred to London for questioning and can be held for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act.
Searches are continuing at the house, although neighbours (ABOUT 90 RESIDENTS IN 119 HOMES AND BUILDINGS) evacuated yesterday have been allowed home.
The Scotland Yard spokesman would not comment on reports that a suicide attack on a football ground had been foiled, saying no specific threat had been identified.
He also refused to comment on reports that the suspect, who is a BRITISH MUSLIM (that is, a Muslim holding BRITISH passport, having given a solemn pledge to the Sovereign to DEFEND life, property and territory of this UNITED Kingdom, and not to do anything separatist like the breaking up of UNITED India in 1947), had links to shoebomber Richard Reid who tried to blow up an American Airlines Paris to Miami jet carrying 197 passengers in December 2001.
Home Secretary David Blunkett said the Gloucester man posed "a very real threat to the life and liberty of our country".
Describing the suspect as possibly "part of a wider network", Mr Blunkett said: "It is the belief of the security and Special Branch services that this man has connections with the network of al-Qaida groups.
"That is why he has been arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000. Obviously, the forensic evidence will be absolutely crucial here.
"I do not want to in any way damage the future trial, but we would not have taken these steps if we did not believe that this individual posed a very real threat to the life and liberty of our country."
In a separate operation, a 39-year-old man was arrested at an undisclosed address in Manchester.
Both men were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act "on suspicion of involvement in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism", Scotland Yard and Greater Manchester Police confirmed.
