I've spent a day inside Saddam's huge palace, which now serves as the neo-Imperial seat of American government. Hardly an Iraqi to be seen, beyond those who sweep the floors empty the bins and serve in the canteen.
That is set in Saddam's vast ballroom, where a thousand Americans can be seated at a session.
The governing machine is awesome and active. They really are moving hard on some of the country's key problems: electricity, security, and business. But the sense of Iraq is almost absent from the place.
Saddam's infernal Jerusalem with its murals of weapons of mass destruction and Jerusalem's dome of the rock, now serves as a Chapel.
His throne has been sat in by so many GI bottoms that it is now unpresidentially grubby.
