New Delhi, May 14 Thirty-four people, including 23 armymen and their family members, were killed Tuesday when three militants opened fire on a bus in Kashmir and then stormed the residential quarters of a nearby Indian army camp, officials said. Twenty-three people, including soldiers and their family members, were killed at the army camp near Jammu, along with seven bus passengers and the three rebels, a police spokesman said.
The attack, the deadliest on the army in Kashmir in the past year, came hours after US Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca arrived in New Delhi to urge the Indian leadership to cool tempers with Pakistan.

A little-known rebel group called al-Mansoorain claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack in a telephone call to the NAFA news agency in Srinagar. But an army official alleged it was the work of Jaish-e-Mohammad, a hardline movement blamed in part by India for the December 13 attack on its Parliament.
The group, known for suicide bombings, was later banned by Pakistan. "The identities of the militants could not be ascertained, but it is believed they are from Jaish-e-Mohammad," Major General Mohan Pandey, who commands the 26th infantry, told AFP. The militants had boarded a bus from Himachal Pradesh state en route to Jammu. "At 6:10 am, they opened indiscriminate fire in the bus and lobbed a grenade," Pandey said. Seven bus passengers, four of them women, were killed in the bus bloodbath at Kaluchak, some 15 kilometers south of Jammu, he said. A guard at a nearby army camp spotted three guerrillas as they ran out of the bus and opened fire on them.
One rebel was killed, but the others sneaked into the army camp's residential quarter, where they began shooting at soldiers' family members, officials said.
"Some of them bolted their doors from inside, but the militants tried to open the doors and were shooting at the family members," Pandey said. The army retaliated by firing rockets at a nearby house where the militants were believed to have taken refuge. The operation was over by 10:00 am with all three rebels dead, Pandey said.
The army camp mostly housed women and children, as the bulk of the soldiers had been deployed to the disputed border with Pakistan. The buildings were devastated by the attack. The army rushed the remaining families out of the camp and put them up a nearby regiment center, officials said.

Jammu, May 14: In probably the biggest militant attack ever, on Tuesday killed around 34 people when they attacked a bus and later stormed a nearby Army camp in Jammu.
The attack came as US Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca begins her visit to the subcontinent to try to defuse tension between India and Pakistan at the border. Early on Tuesday, four militants fired indiscriminately at a Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation bus coming from Kangra on the Jammu-Pathankot highway killing seven passengers.
The fidayeen then stormed a residential area adjoining a nearby Army camp at Kaluchak, about 10 km from Jammu. Three militants, who stormed the Army camp, were also killed.
Two militant groups-little known Al Masooran, suspected to be a shadow group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba, and Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen-have claimed responsibility for the suicide attack.
A caller identifying himself as Irfan Kashmiri told Srinagar-based news and feature alliance that his group had carried out the attacks in Jammu. He identified the militants as Abu Majid, Abu Zaffar Andabu Shel.
Another Pakistan-based outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen also called the same news agency and claimed responsibility for the attacks.
According to sources, the slain militants appear to owe allegiance to Jaish-e-Mohammad.
Giving details, the sources said that three militants in combat dress boarded a Jammu-bound Himachal Roadways bus near Bari Brahmana around 5.45 am. While one of them sat near the bus driver, the other two occupied the rear seats.
Hardly 15 minutes later as the bus reached Kaluchak, all the three resorted to firing from the front and the rear side, killing seven passengers on the spot. As the bus driver stopped the bus outside an Army camp, the fidayeens came out of the vehicle and threw a hand grenade.
As the fidayeens were in combat dress, the Armymen deployed at the camp took them as their comrades. They realised their mistake only after the fidayeens stormed into their residential quarters inside the camp and started resorting to indiscriminate firing. The troops immediately cordoned the area and in a four-hour-long fierce gun battle, the troops killed all the three fidayeens. Most of the killed include women and children.
The injured have been admitted to the military hospital. No one is being allowed to contact them.
Senior army and police officers also reached the spot to supervise the operation against militants.
Meanwhile, the vehicular traffic on the national highway was stopped, with bee line of vehicles parked on both sides of the Kaluchak during the encounter.
A general alert has been sounded in the entire Jammu division amid reports of militants having sneaked into the state from across the border.
