IN ORDER TO GIVE WEIGHT TO THEIR DEMAND FOR PAKISTAN, THEY ORDERED THE GENERAL MASSACRE OF THE UNWARY, INNOCENT HINDUS IN THE NOAKHALI DISTRICT OF BENGAL IN AUGUST 1946.

The inordinate delay of the ill-fated Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express on February 27 inadvertently saved the lives of hundreds of passengers. The original plan of the conspirators was to burn down the entire train at Chanchlav station, 12 kms from Godhra and trigger communal riots throughout the country in a bid to obstruct the Ramshila puja in Ayodhya.
The veil over the sinister, pre-planned conspiracy was lifted following the interrogation of Hasim, alias "Sayed Raza", an accused in the Jalgaon bomb case. A notorious history-sheeter of Bihar, Hasim has been brought to Gujarat on a transfer warrant from Jalgaon and has been taken on ten-days remand by the State CID sleuths probing the Godhra case.
According to a report, Hasim, the mastermind of the Godhra carnage, has been a member of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) since 1995. During his interrogation, Hasim has admitted that his original plan was to waylay the train near Chanchlav station, 12 kms from Godhra and burn it down.
Godhra was selected as the nerve centre for his operation in view of its communally explosive potential and the existence of a SIMI network in the place. The plan was based on information that a large number of karsevaks going to Ayodhya were from Gujarat.
Investigations have confirmed that Hasim had visited Godhra at least seven times in the last few months.
As per the plan, on February 26 night, three truckloads of people were taken to Chanchlav. However since the train was late by about five hours, the group decided to return. It halted at a wayside restaurant for tea and refreshments and then returned to camp at Signal Falia in Godhra. More people were collected here by the key conspirators. Rumours were spread that the karsevaks travelling by the train had attacked a mosque on the way. This immediately saw a swelling up in numbers. Incendiary material needed for the attack had already been collected before-hand.
However, the change in venue as an afterthought triggered by the five-hour delay proved a blessing in disguise and restricted the real carnage to just one coach. In Chanchav it would have taken the police and the fire brigade much longer to reach the spot and the dance of death and destruction would have continued unhindered. Investigators probing the incident are of the opinion that Hasim had taken Haji Bilal and Mohammed Hussain Kalota into confidence. Bilal was reportedly the first one to reveal the name of Hasim.
Though the crack team probing the case is yet to lay its hands on any concrete proof of the involvement of outside forces, it is strongly of the opinion that Godhra was not an isolated outburst but a well-planned plot with the sole aim of destablising the country at a time of intense communal tension, in other words, the Ayodhya build-up.
